Get and Jewish divorce

At Glaser Jones Law, we are fully aware of the distinctive ways in which Judaism treats divorce. We’re prepared to help you meet the requirements set out by the Halacha, should you decide to separate from your partner according to Jewish law, and find a way to balance this with the English family court system.

Shlomit Glaser, our principal solicitor, has extensive experience of assisting Jewish couples thanks to her time spent as a lawyer in Israel. By combining this with the knowledge she’s gained as a solicitor in England, Shlomit can guide you through the intricacies of a Jewish divorce.

We understand that there can be additional difficulties if you are a religious person. You may live in a community with codes of behaviour and laws which place you in a sensitive position.

Shlomit has considerable experience of such cases and understands that they require discretion and delicacy.

Jewish divorce According to Halacha

According to Halacha, a couple can only be released from the bonds of matrimony when a bill of divorce is passed from the husband to the wife. This document is normally referred to in its Aramaic name; a get. This acts as proof of the marriage’s dissolution.

We will work with the beth din to ensure that everything is accurate and adheres to biblical law. Once the document is created, the husband will hand the document to the wife in the presence of two kosher witnesses. The moment she takes the document marks the point at which the marriage is dissolved. The beth din will then give both parties a certificate confirming their new marital status.

According to the Jewish faith, you must also obey the ‘law of the land’ when getting a divorce, which means you must also file for a civil divorce. We are uniquely placed to help you fulfil the needs of both the civil and Halachic processes and help you resolve any inconsistencies.

Beyond the religious requirements, we recognise that any divorce can be confusing and emotionally distressing. We will be at your side throughout the entire process, providing you with the assistance and expertise you need to get through without feeling totally overwhelmed.

Contact us today and find out how we can provide you with invaluable support that can help you satisfy both religious and legal requirements when separating from your partner.
